Exploring Milestones: WAPP-JICA Collaboration Unveils a Visionary Power Initiative

Wednesday, February 21, 2024

In a notable stride towards regional power system enhancement, the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) convened a significant cooperation meeting as part of the "Project for Strengthening Regional Power System of West African Power Pool (WAPP)".

The collaboration was further elaborated during the working visit Jof ICA to the WAPP Information and Coordination Center (ICC) from January 23 to 26, 2024. The primary objective of this visit was to delve into comprehensive discussions, laying the groundwork for profound technical cooperation between the two institutions. The visit singularly focused on addressing identified issues to enhance the power pool. This strategic approach encompasses the promotion of power station and interconnector development, along with enhancements to system and market operations.

In this recent collaborative effort, both WAPP and JICA identified priority areas and modalities for the technical cooperation. The outcomes of these deliberations is expected to wield a significant influence on the impending joint initiatives between these two dynamic entities.

The beneficiaries of this visionary project encompasses all ECOWAS countries, Transmission System Operators (TSOs), the 18 ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market Participants, and the Regional Training Center (RTC). This inclusivity underscores the collaborative commitment to regional growth and development.

This comprehensive overview mirrors the robust collaborative spirit between WAPP and JICA, setting the stage for impactful advancements in the West African power sector. As these two entities align their visions and strategies, the shared goal of strengthening the regional power system takes center stage.

The WAPP-JICA collaboration stands as a testament to the commitment towards fostering sustainable energy solutions in the West African region. As the initiatives unfold, the joint efforts promise to usher in a new era of resilience and innovation in the realm of power infrastructure, creating a lasting impact for the benefit of all stakeholders involved.
