WAPP and ASEA Forge historic partnership to boost Energy Integration in Africa

Thursday, May 23, 2024

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (ASEA) have united in a historic agreement aimed at invigorating energy integration across Africa. This strategic partnership is committed to eliminating activity redundancies and optimizing benefits for their respective members.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a robust framework for collaboration over a six-year period, setting up a cooperation committee and regular meetings to ensure effective follow-up. The areas of cooperation cover a wide range, from strengthening institutional ties to developing specialized training programs and valuable exchanges of technical expertise.

The primary objective of this alliance is to jointly stimulate research and development, foster knowledge management, and support the growth of training centers in the electricity sector. By working together, these two institutions aspire to promote a culture of innovation and excellence within the energy sector.

This strategic partnership represents a significant step toward closer energy integration on the African continent, thereby promoting sustainable development at the regional level.

During the signing ceremony, the heads of both institutions highlighted the importance of capacity building and human capital development in achieving successful electrical integration in Africa. They emphasized the development of WAPP's Regional Centers of Excellence to effectively manage the training of professionals in the electricity sector.
