RELP and WAPP Partner to Advance West Africa's Regional Electricity Market Integration

Friday, July 10, 2026

BRUSSELS / ABOMEY-CALAVI RELP has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the West African Power Pool (WAPP). This partnership supports the development of West Africa's Regional Electricity Market and aims to facilitate clean energy investment across the region.

WAPP is currently entering a pivotal phase, strengthening the implementation of the Regional Electricity Market, preparing to launch a Day-Ahead Market and synchronizing national electricity networks across 15 countries. To support these efforts and further regional integration, RELP will offer pro bono institutional capacity strengthening by embedding key expertise directly within the WAPP Secretariat and providing independent advisory support on project de-risking and blended finance solutions to assist in the development of new regional transmission interconnectors, clean energy and energy storage projects.

"Strengthening the institutional capacities of the WAPP Secretariat is essential to effectively support our ongoing regional electricity market integration initiatives. This collaboration with RELP will help us advance our goal of ensuring a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy supply for the populations of ECOWAS Member States." Abdoulaye Dia, Secretary General of WAPP

“Regional integration is a key lever to lower supply costs, strengthen energy security, and encourage investment in clean generation and transmission. We are honored to provide our pro bono technical support to WAPP at such a crucial phase, strengthening its ability to effectively promote and deliver broad regional electricity market integration in West Africa. This is a truly exciting project with the potential to bring transformative benefits to the people and businesses of the region. We are ready to work with the WAPP Executive Team and all the partners involved” Andrea Bertello, Country Engagement & Partnerships at RELP.
