19th Session of WAPP General Assembly

On Friday, November 29, 2024, the 19th session of the General Assembly of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) was held in the beautiful city of Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. This annual event, of significant importance, brings together WAPP member utilities, technical and financial partners, and high-level officials to discuss progress and perspectives for developing the regional electricity market.

A High-Level Gathering

The session was graced by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Minister of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy of Côte d'Ivoire. Other notable attendees included Mr. Sediko Douka, ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization; mr. Noumory Sidibé, Director General of CI-Énergies; Ing. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, Chairman of the Executive Board, the Acting Secretary General of WAPP, Ing. Abudulkadir NAZIF; and Mrs. Clara Winkler-Tomety, Deputy Director of the KfW office in Abidjan, representing the technical and financial partners (TFPs).

Review and Adoption of Strategic Documents

During the session, Assembly members reviewed and adopted several key documents:

  1. The report of the 18th session of the WAPP General Assembly.
  2. The 2024 activity report presented by the Secretary General.
  3. The report of WAPP's External Auditors
  4. Recommendations from the meetings of the WAPP Executive Board.

Highlights of the Session

The session's highlight was the official presentation of the new Secretary General of WAPP, Mr. Abdoulaye Dia, who succeeds Ing. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz. This significant moment marks the beginning of a new era for the organization, focused on strengthening regional cooperation and accelerating priority projects.
Additionally, the session included the signing of the statutes by WAPP's new members, officially marking their integration, and the ratification of the decisions made during this 19th General Assembly.

Renewed Commitment

This meeting once again demonstrated the collective commitment of regional and international stakeholders to build a resilient and competitive electricity market in West Africa. With the support of its members and partners, WAPP continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable and affordable electricity access for the region's population while enhancing energy security.
Abidjan will remain a landmark for this event, a testament to a strong and visionary partnership dedicated to the energy development of West Africa.
