From 23 to 27 March 2026, Dakar hosted the CIGRE West Africa Study Committees Meetings and Training Sessions, a major regional technical event organized by the West African National Committee of CIGRE, in partnership with the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and Senelec. The event took place at the Noom Hotel Dakar and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen capacity and cooperation among electricity sector stakeholders in the sub-region.
Over the course of five days, participants took part in workshops, tutorials, technical courses, and working group meetings covering several key sector themes, including overhead lines, electricity markets, power system development and economics, transmission and distribution equipment, direct current systems, power electronics, as well as protection and automation.
Through this event, WAPP reaffirms its commitment to enhancing the technical capacities of its member utilities and to promoting a platform for exchange among industry experts. This initiative also helps support the ongoing transformations in the West African power system, at a time marked by accelerated regional integration and ambitions to modernize electricity networks.
By supporting this framework for training and consultation, WAPP continues to pursue its mission of fostering closer technical cooperation among ECOWAS electricity sector stakeholders and contributing to the development of a more efficient, reliable, and integrated regional electricity market.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Mr. Birame Souleye DIOP, Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of Senegal, in the presence of the Secretary General of WAPP, Mr. Abdoulaye DIA, in his capacity as Secretary General of the CIGRE West Africa Committee, along with many senior officials from the electricity sector, universities, and experts from around the world.
