From 15th to 19th December 2025, the West African Power Pool (WAPP) brought together the Finance Directors of its utilities, along with members of the Engineering Operating Committee (EOC), for a week of strategic discussions. This highly anticipated meeting provided an opportunity to review major milestones achieved in the development of the Regional Electricity Market and to strengthen coordination ahead of the launch of Market Phase 2.
On Friday, January 16, 2026, the Secretary General of WAPP, Mr. Abdoulaye DIA, had the pleasure of welcoming the new ProMERC II Project Manager of GIZ, Mr. André ROENNE, for an introductory visit and exchange of views.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing areas of cooperation as well as future perspectives, particularly with regard to the development of the Regional Electricity Market, institutional capacity building, and the promotion of an integrated, sustainable, and inclusive energy sector.
Throughout 2025, the WAPP General Secretariat actively participated in the ECOWAS Golden Jubilee celebrations, alongside the ECOWAS Representation in Benin and the Multilateral Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone E. The festivities were officially launched on May 30, 2025, at the Novotel Orisha Hotel in Cotonou, in the presence of public institutions, diplomatic representatives, youth organizations, NGOs, and West African communities.
The project to reinforce the 330 kV Nigeria–Benin interconnection has been named a winner at the 2025 Grands Prix du Génie-conseil québécois, during the 23rd edition held under the theme ENGINEERING+CONSULTING: At the Crossroads of Expertise.
The West African Power Pool (WAPP), under the leadership of its Secretary General, Mr. Abdoulaye DIA, and in collaboration with the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) of its member utilities, has successfully conducted a historic synchronization test of the West African power grid.

A Renewed Commitment to Strengthening Regional Energy Cooperation
As part of efforts to enhance the ties between the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the Government of Benin, Mr. Kingnidé Paulin Akponna, Minister of Energy, Water and Mines of the Republic of Benin, paid a courtesy visit to the WAPP headquarters in Calavi on Friday, May 9, 2025. This visit followed up on discussions initiated during an official audience previously granted by the Minister to the WAPP Secretary General, Mr. Abdoulaye DIA, a few weeks earlier.
